The Downeast Concert Collective & WERU FM are excited to bring singer, songrwriter, shantyman & balladeer Geoff Kaufman. He will perform in Ellsworth to benefit WERU Community Radio 89.9 FM at the Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, May 29th at 7:30 P.M. Doors open at 7 PM. Suggested donation is $15. Free for those under 16. Seating is limited and reservations are suggested by calling 667-7825 or emailing info@downeastmusic.org.
About Geoff Kaufman

For the past twenty-eight years, Geoff Kaufman has been leading audiences to find truth, humor, and beauty in folk music. Whether singing sailor songs with his quartet, Forebitter; or environmental songs on board the Sloop Clearwater in the Hudson River; or in solo performances at coffeehouses throughout the Northeast United States and festivals in Europe, Geoff has entertained and touched audiences near and far.

Songs of the sea, songs of the earth, songs of the heart and the spirit—all of these are in Geoff Kaufman’s ditty bag. Ancient ballads, work songs, and songs of love; poignant songs of people in struggle, humorous glimpses of human foibles, and insights into history—all of these are likely to be woven into one of Geoff’s concerts.

Above all, at the core of Geoff’s performance is his rich tenor voice and an exuberant love of singing. And part of that love is to entice audiences to sing along, to share in the exhilaration of full-throated vocalization if they wish. In this age of electronic overload and passive media pabulum, Geoff likes to stress the “live” in live performance, promoting participation, be it by voice or heart or mind.

“…we are stunned by the beauty of your music.” – a fan in Corpus Christi, TX

The Downeast Concert Collective & WERU FM are very excited to bring back award-winning songwriter Cosy Sheridan along with TR Ritchie in concert on Sunday November 15 at 7:30 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth, ME.

Doors open at 7 PM. Suggested donation is $15. Free for those under 16. This is a benefit concert for WERU, all profits go to WERU FM.

Sheridan has been called “one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful singer/songwriters.” Winner of both the Telluride Bluegrass Troubadour Contest and the Kerrville Folk Festival’s NewFolk Songwriting Contest, she has played everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Her songs have appeared on the Jerry Lewis Telethon, The Dr Demento Show, in best-selling author Robert Fulghum’s new book “Third Wish”, on NPR’s Car Talk, and in the documentary “Wrenched.”

Sheridan, together with her partner, fellow songwriter and bassist, TR Ritchie gives one of the most entertaining and intelligent concert performances on the folk circuit. She is a storyteller as well as a songwriter, weaving children’s stories into stories of modern adulthood: The Little Engine That Could discusses quality of life issues with Ferdinand The Bull. Her modern renditions of mythology (we meet Hades the biker) have won her fans and praise. The Cornell Folksong Society wrote: “Sheridan is frank, feisty, sublimely and devilishly funny. She fuses myth with modern culture; Persephone with Botox.”

Sheridan first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriting contests at the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and released her critically acclaimed CD Quietly Led on Waterbug Records. Folk Music Quarterly wrote: “When she’s accepting her Grammy, we can say we knew her when.”

Since then she’s released 5 more CDs, and written a one-woman-show (and accompanying CD) entitled The Pomegranate Seed – An Exploration of Appetite, Body-Image and Myth in Modern Culture. She recently composed a song-cycle for best-selling author Robert Fulghum’s new book Third Wish – which has been at the top of the bestseller list in the Czech Republic since last year.

“Somewhere in the uncharted territory of Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Dr. Ruth, and Deepak Chopra is you at a Cosy Sheridan concert – laughing and crying. Go there.” – CATIE CURTIS
